“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”
Divergent is one of the most spellbinding and captivating books I have ever read. I was hooked right away and couldn’t put it down until I finished it. The manner in which Veronica Roth wrote this novel is enticing to readers. There is an immense amount of suspense in every twist and turn the characters take. This novel is about more than the blooming chemistry between Four and Tris, the tension and strain amongst the five factions, or even loyalty of factions over families. It’s about young adults deciding their fate. They have to decide who they are and where they belong in one day and there is absolutely no going back. If they fail, they become factionless. The rest of their life is riding on that one decision of which faction they believe they belong to. But more importantly, it’s about proving that being different, “divergent”, is not bad. Tris tries to use her divergences to fight among the rising malicious and power seeking Erudite leader Jeanine who plans to take over all of the factions. And by the end of it all, Tris knows who she is. Not Abnegation, not Dauntless, but Divergent.

Recommendation: Teens that enjoy a strong female lead in a action story with a mixture of a love story.

The decision for a person to decide to change his/her fraction or keep to the one you grew up in is a tough decision for an ordinary sixteen year old. For Tris this decision was more difficult. Divergent keeps a person reading. I never wanted to put it down. It is full of action and danger. Tris tries to survive initiation while fighting the extra pressure Four tends to give her. She's picked out from the rest of the initiates and targeted. From being beaten in training, and almosted killed for being a “stiff” Tris just wants to become a Dauntless member, but is faced with a bigger challenge.
